SFRA Special Topics Courses

A portfolio of "Special Topics" courses was offered to MSc students in 2010/2011. These courses are led by industrial companies and are designed to expose students to topical issues affecting the industry, as well as to methods and solutions used by industry. They are also referred to as "guided reading" courses as a large element of self-study is expected of the students.

Special Topics Courses

  • Four courses took place over the period 18 to 25 February 2011 inclusive.
  • The company's nominated lecturer gives one or more lectures. The lectures are typically of 2-3 hours' duration per session, and some extend over 2 sessions.
  • The course lecturer suggests a course of further reading and an assignment.
  • The assignment is generally assessed by means of either a student presentation or an essay.
  • The assessment is carried out by an academic member of staff.
  • Students interested in potential MSc placements within a company are recommended to attend the company's special topics course.
