MSc Summer Placements

Summary

Companies offer summer placements to MSc students who work on short research projects and write their MSc dissertations under the joint supervision of an industrial partner and a member of an academic department.

  • Provides a simple mechanism for companies to start interacting with Academia on research issues.
  • Gives companies access to talented MSc students.
  • No costs involved; short duration projects.
  • Flexible format: student may spend whole period working at company or interact through a series of visits.

How to Become Involved in 2012

Please get in touch with Professor Alexander McNeil: a.j.mcneil@hw.ac.uk. Alternatively, please download and complete the MSc Projects Proforma and email it to Noreen ODonnell.

How it Works

  • 16 January 2012 Deadline for companies to provide SFRA with project list.
  • w/c 23 January Project opportunities advertised to MSc students at a number of universities.
  • 20 February Deadline for receipt of student expressions of interest.
  • 27 February Student details collated and issued to companies.
  • March Window for companise to interview students.
  • 3 April Matching of students to projects begins. This process is expected to take no more than 2 weeks in total.
  • April Course Directors or appointed supervisors have opportunity to refine project definitions with companies if desired.
  • May University Exam Board confirms the student's eligibility to proceed to MSc project.
  • End-May/early June Projects are initiated.
  • Mid-August Student presentation and debrief session.
  • August/September Dissertations are submitted according to University deadlines.
